HomeGlossary › Competency-Based Interview

A competency-based interview (CBI) is a structured interview technique that assesses a candidate's past behaviour in relation to specific skills and competencies required for a role.

In a recruitment agency context, competency-based interviews are utilised to evaluate candidates against predefined competencies that align with job requirements. Recruiters often use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to guide candidates in articulating their experiences, ensuring that responses are relevant and focused on demonstrating the desired skills. This method allows agencies to standardise the interview process, making it easier to compare candidates objectively.

Competency-based interviews matter because they provide insights into how candidates have handled real-life situations, which can be more indicative of future performance than traditional interview questions. Furthermore, they help mitigate bias by focusing on evidence of skills rather than subjective impressions. Recruiters should be aware that candidates may require guidance on the STAR method, and interviewers should remain flexible, allowing for follow-up questions to clarify responses and gain deeper insights into the candidate's capabilities.
