HomeGlossary › Counter Offer

A counter offer is an improved employment proposal made by an employer to a resigning employee in an attempt to persuade them to remain with the company.

In a recruitment agency context, counter offers often arise when a candidate receives a job offer from another company but has not yet formally accepted it. The current employer may respond by presenting a counter offer that includes enhanced salary, benefits, or career development opportunities. Recruiters must be prepared to navigate these situations, advising clients on how to approach the conversation and the potential implications of retaining the employee versus allowing them to leave.

Counter offers are significant as they can indicate underlying issues within the organisation, such as employee dissatisfaction or inadequate compensation structures. Additionally, accepting a counter offer can sometimes lead to a lack of trust between the employee and employer, as the employee may feel that their value was only recognised after they threatened to leave. Recruiters should consider these factors when discussing counter offers with both clients and candidates.
